Oh I do like to be beside the seaside

I spent a lovely hour last Friday evening looking at the sea in Penarth, Cardiff. Once a month or so, I take my children to a Kumon Maths class in Penarth, and while they are slaving over their workbooks, I love walking along the sea wall and down to the Pier and looking at the sea. Last Friday was a beautiful day; clear blue skies with the sun shining. It was still warm at 5 o'clock and it felt more like April than February - just right for an hour or so thinking time.....
I came home fired up with a nautical frame of mind and a few hours later had designed and created this book bag for boys. Over the years, I have made lots of bags that girls love but I find the cute two-handled style just doesn’t cut it with boys.

My one strap design goes over the shoulder like a satchel or messenger bag, and I hope will appeal to boys of all ages.

I have the nautical bug now and have been scouring the fabric stores for sea style fabric. It seems that the sea has inspired a number of other crafters recently, here are just a few I found on Folksy and among my The Old Button Facebook likes.

FiS Jewellery is the Folksy shop of a very talented jewellery design student and I just love the strong colour of this pair of earrings called Orient sea

I also love the beach backdrop used for many of FiS's pieces - I love taking my pictures outside and I will have make a special trip to one of our lovely South Wales beaches to photograph my nautical collection.

Sea breeze scarf in bamboo is from another Folksy shop, re:made, that offers a range of contemporary handmade goods, often with a recycled element.

This picture appealed to me as the colour of the sea is perfectly reflected in the scarf and I think the strong white sleeve of the model just adds to the sea style feel of the product - I am reminded of a child holding up a string of sea-weed.

This seaside image by Cassia Beck just made me hope we get a good summer. Imaging sitting on a stripy deckchair, looking out to sea while eating an ice cream under blue skies.

Don't you think this just cries out to be pinned on the office wall while counting down the days to the holidays.

I hope you all have a lovely spring.... and summer....
